India to get real time data from BBM

Finally, Indian law enforcement agencies will be able to get real time data of the BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) service, a USP of the BlackBerry mobile phones made by Canada based Research In Motion (RIM).

The breakthrough reached between the ministry of home affairs (MHA) and RIM recently will enable real time monitoring of BBM service, which is being used by forces inimical to the country’s interests, including terrorists, for its highly encrypted form of data that is almost impossible to decode. For this BlackBerry has set up a server in Mumbai, highly placed sources said.

The development puts pressure on other service providers to follow suit. Sources said that the decoding of another highly encrypted BlackBerry service - the BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES) is being worked out and is nearing solution.

But the BES does not have as serious repercussions as BBM as it is being used mainly by corporations for their business needs and if needed could be taken from their servers, added sources.

About 5,000 corporations are using BES to send secure messages to its employees and want the system to remain in place to deter enemy corporations from getting access to their business secrets.

India had started the demand to set up servers two years ago. Called mandated local server hosting, it is expected to help the BlackBerry to bring down its bandwidth demand in India by several notches which is being used to serve over 500 million users.
