Education sector unlocking job opportunities in smaller cities

Smaller cities such as Kozhikode, Lucknow, and Visakhapatnam have emerged as the top employment providers in education sector.

According to a TimesJobs.com study these cities have registered a growth of close to 50% in the vacancies in education sector in the past quarter ending March 2012. Other cities in the list include Ranchi, Nasik, Allahabad, Nagpur and Kochi which reported 15-25% jump in job opening in the education sector.

Today, with government initiatives, foreign funding and industry endeavors the education sector is expanding fast. Its expansion in the smaller cities has unlocked a host of new job opportunities in the sector. Opening up of big and renowned educational institutions and surge of coaching institutes combined with the growth of supporting infrastructure is a major factor contributing to the rise of employment opportunities in these cities, suggest industry experts.

Be it teachers, educational trainers, content developers, product managers, business development or marketing executives, the sector is actively hiring across functional areas. Maximum hiring (nearly 50%) is at fresher level followed by mid-level hiring, revealed the TimesJobs.com study.

Kolkata (32%) is the only metro to be featured amongst the top ten employment providers in education sector. Other major metros such as Delhi/NCR, Mumbai, Bangalore and Chennai registered minor single-digit growth in job opportunities in education sector, indicated study.

Challenged with the lack of availability of talent, many organisations have turned to smaller cities. There is sufficiently large talent pool around, the companies are now exploring these untapped markets.

Industry experts have predicted Education sector to be one of the major demand drivers in the Indian market for 2012 along with high volume industries such as FMCG, IT/ITeS, Infrastructure and Pharma & Healthcare.

Commenting on the potential of education sector, Raja Shanmugam - Chief People Officer of Happiest Minds Technologies told TJinsite, "I am expecting education sector to become a key employment generator in terms of numbers and quality of employment in 2012." The sector is indeed on its way to be the next big employment generator.
